Use of TikTok at UBC – Recommendations & Guidelines

March 28, 2023

TikTok is one of UBC’s fastest-growing social media platforms. However, it has also raised security and privacy concerns due to its data collection practices and sharing data with its parent company ByteDance, which is based in China.

The Government of Canada has issued a ban on the use of TikTok on government-issued devices, and provincial governments have followed suit. UBC is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as required.

In the meantime, we encourage you to take safety precautions by uninstalling the TikTok app from your devices and using your web browser to access content instead.

We also recommend that you evaluate your activities on all your social media accounts, including updating your privacy settings and limiting the amount of personal information you share.
