By combining the adoption of these quick tips and remaining vigilant, the UBC community can contribute to the creation of a safer online experience for all. Let's empower ourselves and each other to navigate the internet with confidence and security.

  1. Check the Website's URL:

    • Look for typos or misspellings in the domain name. Fraudulent websites often use domain names that are similar to well-known brands but may have slight variations.
  2. Look for Secure Connection Indicators:

    • Check the website's SSL certificate by clicking on the padlock icon in the address bar. Make sure the certificate is valid and issued by a trusted authority.
    • Ensure the website's URL starts with "https://" rather than just "http://". The "s" indicates a secure connection, which is important for transmitting sensitive information.
  3. Evaluate Website Design and Content:

    • Poor design, low-quality images, and inconsistent formatting can be signs of a fraudulent website.
    • Be cautious if the website has an excessive number of pop-up ads, especially those that prompt you to click on links or provide personal information.
  4. Check for Contact Information:

    • Legitimate websites usually provide clear and accurate contact information, including a physical address and telephone number. Be suspicious if this information is missing or seems fake.
  5. Review Privacy Policies and Terms of Service:

    • Legitimate websites have clear and easily accessible privacy policies and terms of service. Be cautious if these documents are missing or written in an unprofessional manner.
